Northwest Africa (NWA) 11228 Lunar Meteorite
Northwest Africa 11228 is a Lunar meteorite classified as a feldspathic breccia. NWA 11228 was purchased on March 20, 2017 in Morocco as many irregular shaped fragments. NWA 11228 has a dark sandblasted exterior, with no remaining fusion crust. The officially recorded total known weight is 140 grams.
NWA 11228 is a fragmental breccia. The main minerals seen are pyroxene, plagioclase, and olivine which are set in a fine grained groundmass. Fine grained accessory Fe-metal and sulfide are also found in NWA 11228. Also observed during microprobe examination were minor amounts of shock melt. All of the pyroxene grains that were microprobed consisted of pigeonite, no augite was found. NWA 11228 has a high shock stage and is a moderately weathered meteorite.
