Gold Basin Meteorite
Find / Fall: Find – 1995
Location: Mohave County Arizona, USA
Classification: Chondrite L4
Total Known Weight: 61 kg
The Gold Basin meteorites are found in a long strewnfield on the western edge of Arizona. Discovered in 1995 the meteorites had long been discarded as hot rocks by the prospectors who uncovered them with metal detectors while searching for gold which is frequently found in the area. Gold Basin is thought to be a meteorite with a very long terrestrial age. It is believed that the meteorites fell around or before the last ice age thousands of years ago. As a type L4 it does not have a lot of iron metal, but it is still enough to attract a magnet or set off a metal detector.
