The Dar el Kahal meteorite was found near the historic salt mines of Taoudenni, in northern Mali. A systematic search recovered 85 kg of meteorites from a strewnfield 10 km in diameter. Many of the stones still have a black to dark gray fusion crust. The meteorite has been classified with a W1 weathering state indicating it is quite fresh.
Dar el Kahal is an H5-6 chondrite. Dar el Kahal is a breccia of completely recrystallized type 6 and less recrystallized type 5 clasts. Defined chondrules are seen in the type 5 material. Dar el Kahal is strongly shocked. Considerable nickel-iron metal is visible in slices.
