Campo del Cielo crystals are fragments of larger Campo iron meteorites. A large mass of Campo was first recorded in 1576 by Spanish explorers.However, people native to the area had known about the meteorites for years, and used the material in their tools and weapons. “Campo del Cielo” means “Field of Heaven” in English.

Campo crystals have a distinctly shiny and metallic appearance. Campo del Cielo meteorites are made up of approximately 93% iron and about 7% nickel. Because Campo crystals are smaller pieces of larger Campo individuals, they take extremely unique shapes. Scientists estimate that Campo del Cielo meteorites are about 4.5 billion years old.
